John Erixson, Range Conservationist, is responsible for the monitoring of the range condition and trend on rangelands for private non-industrial and industrial clients.  Mr. Erixson became a partner of Northwest Mangement, Inc. in 2004.  Mr. Erixson has done sensitive plant surveys, worked with private landowners to implement grazing systems, and has written grazing management plans.  He makes recommendations to landowners for improving animal distribution and improving the overall range condition.  Mr. Erixson writes prescribed burn plans that meet prescription and move the property toward the desired plant community.

Mr. Erixson is currently participating in the FireSafe Spokane Urban Interface Program in Spokane, Washington.  He is implementing planning for defensible space through parts of the interface in the Spokane area.

Professional Experience:

1989 – Present; Natural Resource Manager, Northwest Management, Inc.

Mr. Erixson has worked as a Natural Resource Manager for private non-industrial landowners as well as industrial, state and federal agencies since 1989. His primary responsibilities include the oversight and quality control of the company branch offices, timber sale preparation and administration, hazard management, log marketing, rangeland management, range trend analysis and timber inventory and evaluation.
Mr. Erixson is the manager of Northwest Management, Inc.’s branch offices operating in Deer Park, Washington, Hayden, Idaho and Helena, Montana.  Each office is currently staffed with one area forester and one seasonal employee.  Mr. Erixson works with the area forester to ensure the implementation of the Company Business Plan and quality of work presented from each office.

Timber Management and Log Marketing

Mr. Erixson is involved in Northwest Management’s private non-industrial timber sale program.  This program harvests between 10 to 15 MMBF annually. Included in these responsibilities are determining the objectives of the client, preparation of the sale including unit layout, road layout, development and implementation of the silvicultural prescription, timber marking, contract negotiations and sale administration including contract enforcement. As part of the NIPF timber sale program, Mr. Erixson is responsible for preparing the bid prospectus for all the private timber sales. Included in this package is a description of the silvicultural treatment, the species harvested by volume and diameter and location of the sale unit.  The package includes a series of maps to assist log buyers with locating the sale area. He participates in the closing of the sale packages and the evaluation of the bids to determine the best net return for the landowners.

Hazard Management

Mr. Erixson is directly involved in the fuels hazard management program. He is responsible for development of the burn plans for the Headquarters and Pierce Districts for Potlatch Corporation.  Annually, these two districts burn between 700 and 800 acres. Mr. Erixson also implements the plans as weather conditions permit using a combination of heli-torch, drip torch or terra torch.  He is responsible for the ignition and containment of each of the broadcast burns in these districts.
Mr. Erixson is involved in the Fire Safe Spokane/FireWise program in northeast Washington.  Accordingly, he meets with landowners in the urban interface to develop Defensible Space Plans and educate landowners concerning wildfire and a fire safe environment.

Rangeland Management

Mr. Erixson is directly involved in the Rangeland Management Program with Northwest Management, Inc.  As part of the range program, he is responsible for the monitoring of range condition and trends on rangelands for private non-industrial and industrial clients.  Mr. Erixson has conducted sensitive plant surveys, worked with private landowners to implement grazing systems and written grazing management plans.  He makes recommendations to landowners for improving animal distribution and improving the overall range condition.  Mr. Erixson writes prescribed burning plans that meet the specific prescription and move the property toward the desired plant community.

Resource Planning

Mr. Erixson is involved in writing and preparing county-wide fuels hazard assessments and mitigation plans.  As part of a team of professionals, Mr. Erixson prepares on-site evaluations for communities throughout the west.  He prepares action plans for each community to reduce the hazards associated from wildfire.
Mr. Erixson prepares Resource Management Plans for clients in Idaho, Washington, Montana and Wyoming.  He evaluates and assesses the resources to provide a specific prescription to meet landowner objectives.  Recently, a Multi-Resource Management Plan prepared for the Wind River Reservation was nominated for a Presidential Stewardship Award.
